What is QR code ordering for restaurants?

By the KuKA team · Updated Tuesday, October 20, 2026

QR code ordering lets restaurant guests scan a code on the table, open the menu in their phone's browser and send their order straight to the staff, without waiting for a server to take it. The kitchen and floor team see each order on a screen as soon as it is sent. Most systems need no app: the QR code is just a link to a web page tied to that table.

How does QR code ordering work?

Each table gets its own QR code. The code contains a link that identifies the venue and the table, so every order arrives already labelled with the right table number. A typical visit looks like this:

  1. The guest points the phone camera at the QR code on the table.
  2. The menu opens in the phone's browser, in the guest's language where the system supports it.
  3. The guest picks dishes and drinks and sends the order.
  4. The order appears on the staff screen, and the kitchen or bar items go to their own stations.
  5. The guest can reorder or call a member of staff from the same page at any time.

Is a QR menu the same as QR ordering?

No. A QR menu only shows the menu, often as a PDF, and a server still takes the order. QR ordering sends the order itself to the staff. Some systems also take payment inside the same page. KuKA does ordering, reordering, waiter calls and bill requests, and leaves payment to the venue's existing setup.

Do guests need to download an app?

Not with browser-based systems such as KuKA. Asking guests to install an app before they can order adds friction at exactly the wrong moment, so most modern QR ordering runs as a web page.

What are the benefits for a restaurant?

What are the downsides?

Some guests prefer to order from a person, and some do not have a phone with them. Good practice is to keep both options: the QR code for those who want it, and a member of staff for everyone else. A system with a one-tap waiter call, like KuKA, makes it easy to ask for a person at any moment.

How much does QR code ordering cost?

Pricing models vary: monthly subscriptions, a fee per order, or a percentage of each payment when the system also processes payments. KuKA costs €49 per month plus VAT with every feature included, and it charges no transaction fees because it does not process guest payments. See the pricing page for details.

How do I get started?

With KuKA you can open a free demo venue in about two minutes, with sample menus, tables and orders, to see the guest and staff screens before you decide. When you are ready, the set-up guide walks through creating your venue, adding the menu and printing the table QR codes.
